– Scottsdale Restaurants – Carvalho’s Brazilian Kitchen – (CLOSED)
UPDATE MAY 2018 – Carvalho’s is now closed.
A few months back, Carvalho’s Brazilian Kitchen opened up in North Scottsdale, next door to Jalapeno Inferno. I was excited to get over there and have a meal.
Over the course of dinner, I learned that the Brazilian owner and his family had owned a huge fishing camp back in Brazil that people from all over the world came to visit and to try their luck on the Amazon River. The restaurant itself is inspired by the owner’s father, who had a great love of food and created many memorable dishes over the years.
The space itself is open and welcoming. Beautiful glass art adorns the walls and one wall features photos and artifacts from the Amazon. There is also a large patio for you to enjoy Arizona’s great weather.
The menu showcases many Brazilian dishes with lots of grilled and cooked meat, chicken, seafood and vegetable offerings, including classics like Feijoada. If you are not familiar with Brazilian food, each dish has a nice description and the staff is also very helpful in guiding you through the menu.
We sampled quite a few things that evening and all of them were tasty and worth ordering again. Upon starting, we were served Plaintain Chips that were the perfect amount of crunch, slight sweetness and salt. We also ordered some of the Pão de Queijo or cheese bread. The rolls came stuffed with a melted mild cheese and were delicious.
The Caldo Verde or Green Soup was a big hit. Made from collard greens, potatoes and sausage, it was a satisfying and delicious way to start. We also ordered several skewers for the table. The Churrasquinho de Gato featured marinated steak and the Espetinho de Camarão featured shrimp. Both were grilled to perfection and seasoned beautifully.
The final item we tried that night was the Bobo de Camarão and it was spectacular. The shrimp and rice came with a sauce made from yucca, onions, tomatoes, peppers, cilantro and coconut milk. It was mildly sweet and savory at the same time.
Also, if you are looking for a special cocktail, you should try the Caipirihna. It is made with cachaca, a liquor that comes from sugar cane, tons of muddled limes and sugar.
There is a Happy Hour offered on Tuesday through Saturday from 3-7PM and there is live music on Saturday nights from 5:30-8:30PM.
